  • Academic Writing and Research Methodology Course

We at Elmalik Academy of Medical Research believe in the importance of scientific research and its influential role in the development of the medical field. Therefore, we specialize in training our researchers to make them competent to properly start their strides in this field.

So, we have designed a research training package that ensures each researcher gets the required knowledge, and it consists of three stages:

  • Stage One: Online Theoretical Sessions

This stage consists of 26 topics, which are;

1. Overview of academic writing & research methodology

2. General format of manuscripts

3. Academic writing skills

4. Problem definition

5. Literature review

6. Dealing with academic search engines; PubMed

7. Writing a review article

8. Writing a case report

9. Introduction

10. Method: structure & reporting

11. Method: study design

12. Method: sampling techniques

13. Method: sample size calculation

14. Result

15. Discussion & conclusion

16. Abstract

17. Medical statistics

18. Applied statistics: SPSS

19. References

20. Reference manager: Mendeley

21. Figures design: Biorender

22. Proposal writing

23. Publication 1: journal selection

24. Publication 2: paper preparation and submission

25. General issues: ethical attitude, guidelines, and checklists

26. Experimental studies

These lectures are taught online three days a week over 4 weeks.

The instructor will request research ideas from all researchers after teaching the "Problem Definition" session, to be presented immediately after the test.

The total duration of the theoretical sessions stage is 4 weeks.

  • Stage Two: The test

After the sessions end, an online test of 40 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) will be conducted to assess the researcher's uptake of what has been explained. If the researcher passes the test successfully by achieving at least 20 degrees, he will be transferred to the practical stage. If he does not pass the test, he will have a second chance at least 7 days after the date of the first test. If he does not pass again, he will be excluded temporarily.

  • Stage Three: Practical Training

After the researchers pass the test successfully, they will be distributed into research groups of 4 or 5 members. Each group must nominate a leader within a maximum of 24 hours.

The leader communicates with the administration committee to receive his team files, after which he is asked to hand over 4 or 5 research ideas (an idea from each group member) to the administration committee for consideration and validity.

If there is a lack of group ideas, the shortage will be filled by an idea decided by the committee. Still, the researcher responsible for that lack will lose his right to be the first author in that paper to be replaced by the idea holder of the committee.

Researchers of the group should immediately work after confirming the idea's validity, with the preliminary draft to be handed over to the administration committee for review 14 days after the date of idea acceptance.

After all papers completion, the researchers are given 3-5 days to make the required comments, and the final draft is handed over to the committee again for inclusion in the publication record.

  • Work mechanism within a group

The practical training depends on the system of the research circle; by the end, the researcher has completed training on 4 or 5 scientific papers with various tasks.

For the researcher to complete his research circle, he has to work on the following tasks: (crucial for each scientific paper)

1. Finding a research idea and designing the paper structure (headings & subheadings).

2. Writing an introduction.

3. Writing the main body according to the design of the idea holder.

4. Writing the discussion and conclusion.

5. Writing the references, abstract, and keywords and finishing the paper.

The authority ranks are distributed among the group researchers according to each task as follows:

1. Author l: Idea holder and structure designer

2. Author II: Main body writer

3. Author III: Discussion and conclusion writer

4. Author IV: Introduction writer

5. Author V: References, abstract, and keywords writer

The names of the paper's reviewer and publisher will be inserted in the sixth and seventh ranks.

The research group is considered to have completed the research circle by holding over the last paper in the publication record. It is deemed to have graduated after accepting all its papers for publication in journals.

Policies

  • Training Policy

1. The researchers should adhere to the training schedule approved by the administration committee regarding the time of sessions, tests, and hold-over dates.

2. The sessions remain available to researchers only until the expiration of the training. They are reopened after the first test result appears for researchers who did not pass that test and continue until the second test date.

3. A researcher who has not passed the second test is temporarily excluded.

4. A temporarily excluded researcher may be allowed to attend future research sessions after submitting and approving a re-entry application for the administration committee.

5. The committee is entitled to rejection of the application for reinstatement, provided that the reasons for the refusal are clarified.

6. A researcher found to have manipulated or fraudulent tests or to have been involved in any other acts deemed by the administration committee to be incompatible with the ethics of scientific research must be permanently excluded. He must not be entitled to apply for reinstatement to future courses. His name is also included in the Academy's blacklist.

7. It proves the researcher's delay in handing over the task entrusted to him over 24 hours of the prescribed time. (without acceptable excuse)

8. Half the delay is considered if a researcher is delayed but does not exceed 24 hours after the specified handing-over time; It is regarded as a total delay if the act is repeated. (without acceptable excuse)

9. A researcher who does not meet the submission deadline twice throughout the research circle must be excluded and may be allowed to return to practical training with a future circle after submitting and approving a re-entry application to the committee.

10. Exclusion due to two-time delays in handing over deprives the researcher of choice as one of the distinguished researchers by the end of the research circle.

  • Financial Policy

1. The researcher is not allowed to refund the fees after the start of the theoretical sessions stage.

2. Fees are not allowed to be returned to the researcher who has been temporarily excluded for not passing the second test.

3. A researcher who has been excluded due to a delay in handing over the tasks assigned to him twice is not entitled to claim fees.

4. A researcher who has been excluded due to delays in handing over and whose re-entry application has been approved must pay 50% of the fee for full training.

5. A researcher who establishes a note contrary to the ethics of scientific research shall not be entitled to claim any financial dues at any stage of training.
